✨ Ep. 1: Writer Gone Wild ✨

I held my breath, too frightened to scream. Was I watching a tragedy?

I’m here in the tiny ocean state of Rhode Island and I’ve already seen some signs of fall.

I’m not complaining because I love fall. It’s the coziest season and I can’t wait to inhale its comforting scents of apple and pumpkin and cinnamon.

But it’s really strange to see gold and copper leaves on a 78-degree day when you’re driving to the beach in August!

This gives me an idea.

What if I wrote a story where my character is stuck in beach traffic in his shiny red convertible?

Let’s say it’s a similar 78-degree day in August.

The music is blasting—the car is barely moving—but my guy isn’t upset because he’s got great tunes and a view of sun worshippers sitting like seagulls on the beach wall with their eyes on the prize—the ocean.

Meanwhile, the traffic crawls and it doesn’t look like he’s going to get to the beach early enough to beat the crowds.

Finally, he sees the sign for the beach parking lot. He’s turning in—handing his money to the lot attendant—when what the heck? The sky erupts into a blinding white blizzard!

Impossible, you say? Not if you have an imagination.

Remember that scene in Miracle on 34th Street when Kris Kringle is teaching Susan how to pretend?

"How would you like to make snowballs in the summertime?” he says. “Or drive a big bus right down Fifth Avenue?"

He’s telling her about possibilities, which is a huge reason I became a writer—all those gorgeous, endless possibilities.

Fiction writers are manifestors. We’re story magicians. We’re puppeteers who pull the strings on our characters to make them dance or fly or become monkeys, if we want them to.

If we get an idea to make snowballs in the summertime, we don’t wait for permission. We imagine and we do it. Words are power!

How far will you let your imagination take you? In this episode, I’ll talk about:

  • the scary thing that happened at my favorite writing spot [4:24]

  • where to find story gems from your own life [9:22]

  • a writing exercise [11:22]
